Welcome to the University of Sindh, the oldest University in Pakistan. This multidisciplinary University that has more than 19,000 students and 644 academic staff with 8-Faculties that include various research centers, covering the whole spectrum of learning from the Arts, Sciences, Business to Humanities. The University of Sindh started its functioning as Examining body from 1947 and from 1951 as teaching University and takes pride in having and thus far a huge roaster of alumni, over 400,000, among them some renowned Scientists, Educationists, and illustrious personalities and leaders in various fields. The University of Sindh, being a comprehensive, research intensive university, offers Bachelors, Masters, M.Phil/M.S and Ph.D. programs in 49 disciplines. Many emerging science discipline have introduced to within your career scope. The University faculty presently includes 135 teachers with doctoral degrees in various disciplines.It is projected to increase to 200 by 2012 with 48 teachers presently pursuing Ph.D studies mostly in UK, and other 20 enrolled in the university or in other Universities within country. To add to it another batch of 69 teachers is presently going through selection and placement process in foreign Universities, for doctoral studies.
Faculty development efforts will bring about improvement in quality of teaching, besides promotion of research. It is hoped that on their return from abroad, equipped with latest knowledge and excellence achieved in their respective disciplines, these teachers will be able to train and impart knowledge to the potential graduates at home. Presently 446 students are registered for M.Phil/Ph.D. for their research studies.
The University provides Internet facility on 32 MB bandwidth through PERN-2 and provides Bach on gigabits through Fiber Optics to all teaching departments, administration and hostels. The Elsa Kazi campus of the University is connected through radio link. The facility is available to all users of the University. The Internet facility has greatly accelerated research efforts.
The University in its endeavor to provide access to higher Education to potential students in far flung areas who cannot afford study away from home town, has established Sindh University Laar Campus at Badin and University Campus at Mirpurkhas; University Campus at Dadu will be functional from January, 2012. Besides this outreach endeavor, the University also offers Off Campus program in Teacher Education.
The University of today needs to strive far more than it did before, especially in setting role models for entrepreneurial success. It is my cherished desire to see the University as fertile ground for the cultivation and nurturing of dedicated scientists and entrepreneurial and business- minded individuals with leadership qualities to become global citizens.
In our knowledge- based age, higher education has become essential to our prosperity and quality of life.
